The overall aim of this book is to explain 2 Corinthians with reference to the real-life situation addressed by Paul when he wrote, and with the hope that the study may illuminate the abiding importance of the letter. Paul was almost certainly aware that the document would remain in the developing body of writings to be recognized in due time as our “New Testament.”

Hodge’s approach is that it damages the symmetry of 5:1, according to which our earthly house is contrasted with the house not made with hands, the two houses obviously being entities of the same order: if the former is a body, so too the latter. The contrast is not between our immediate physical body and the habitat provided by the heavenly sanctuary, even though elsewhere in Scripture heaven is described as a dwelling.35 Present and ultimate physical states are in mind.
